Welcome to the groove of the 70's underground.
This is the sound of basements in Brooklyn, radios in Watts, humpin'
in Harlem and bumpin' in the Bronx. 'Cos this is the real deal
brothers and sistas. This is where ya get to smell the sweat of the
real funk from smallass little independent labels from the heart of
the ghetto. Ok, I know it's difficult for people to get the full
flavour of the groove 20-30 years later in the comfort of their own
homes. The secret is to simply close your eyes and listen, brothers
and sistas... for this is the "The Big Payback".
And whatta payback this is. Check out the platters opening cut - The
Honeydrippers' "Impeach The President" the off-sampled classic which
has become an anthem for modern day b-boys - though it's probably
not Bill Clinton's fave. Likewise Harlem Underground's "Smokin'
Cheeba Cheeba" (but probably not inhaling) is another smokin'
underground fave which first surfaced on a bootleg Paul 12" many
moons ago. And for those of you who are looking for some real black
consciousness, just listen to Syl Johnson's superlative "Is It
Because I'm Black". Is this bad enough for you.
For those of you who prefer a feel good factor in your funk, check
out Chuck Carbo's "Can I Be Your Squeeze" or (once again) Syl
Johnson's "Kiss By Kiss". For you dancers out there, don't miss the
flyfoot groove of the Mystic Mood's "Honey Trippin".
Or maybe you'd prefer Kellee Patterson's sophisticated funk take on
Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More" or the
jagged funk of Nu Sound Express' "Ain't It Good Enough". And what
about two other bonafide funk classics like Eddie Bo's "Hook And
Sing Pt 1" or the Fabulous Counts "Lunar Funk". Solid classics all.
The Harlem Underground deliver the most chilled cover of Bill
Wither's "Ain't No Sunshine" - and it's hard to choose between it
and Kellee Patterson's vocal version of Grover Washington's "Mr
Magic". But back on the floor just ya try not shakin' yo ass to
Eddie Bo's scintillating "Check Your Bucket".
Whichever way you go, brothers and sistas, trust the man here, cos
there's something for everyone in this package... So get some GLIDE
in yo' STRIDE, some DIP in yo' HIP and get ready to feel da FUNK,
