     Madder Rose's The Love You Save EP could be their best record. It is only
     four tracks but they are really wonderful. They dial the bubbling
     excitement of the Jackson 5's "The Love You Save" down to a low simmer,
     turning the track into a mid-tempo groover with Mary Lorson's vocals
     schoolgirl sweet and smooth. It is one of the better covers of a Motown
     song by an indie rock band. They also work magic on Irma Thomas' "Ruler of
     My Heart" with Lorson again turning in an enchanting vocal while the band
     heads for Cowboy Junkies territory (at least until Billy Cot starts going
     wild on guitar, that is). The two band originals are among their best
     Cot's "No Avail" is a slowly rollicking ballad with a great hook, Lorson's
     "Diane" an aching, intimate lament with some fine feedbacked guitar from
     Cot. The group's full-length albums were always a bit uneven, this EP is a
     short, sharp blast of concentrated indie rock goodness. Well worth the
     effort of tracking it down both for fans of the band and for fans of
     well-played emotional indie rock.
